Information on output formats

Very much a beginner here. I'm using studio 9 platinum with some video from an HDR-SR11 shot in I think the highest quality (HD-FH?).

mpeg-1 does a decent job of reducing my hdr11 cam's 1920x1080 to youtube size. But it seems to me I ought to be able to get higher quality, even for sending to youtube. I've also done vids from a Canon pocket camera (A710) that seem to end up in better quality when I'm done.

I'm not real clear about the role of setting the project properties. I can see where I can set it to 1920x1080 and it looks pretty good in preview. What is the relationship between the project properties and the output format options? Where can I go to find out what the optimum settings should be?

Burning to DVD would be something quite different? So I guess it's really two questions, what's the best output format for youtube or streaming video and what's the bestone for DVD playback?

Thanks,

Thank you for jumping in so quickly. I have been poking around and found this tutorial on youtube that seems quite good. I notice that it also says to use wmv as the output.

I saw the widescreen mpeg2, but no audio. So it sounds like I need to render two files and then make DVD architect work? I've tried a couple times to work with DVD architect and so far have seen only crashes...

I would pick h.264 over WMV any day personally.

Regarding DVDs, yes, you render two files and DVDA puts them back together. As for crashes, that's another problem. Just save often.

For DVD, make sure you save the MPEG-2 and the AC3 files under the same file name and an in the same folder for DVD Architect to mate them up automatically. Otherwise, you'll have to do it manually.

Also, it's usually a good idea to create and render a loop region and render both using that. That way, you'll be sure that they'll synch.

I don't seem to have h.264 in my drop down of render formats. I have WMV 11 and ended up with a 1440x1080 800mb file for a 2 min vid. Really quite stunning running full screen. I tried to back off to 1280x720, but youtube wouldn't accept it, so I tried the bigger one and it went through! And looks pretty good, but the "HD" mode just barely plays over my DSL.

Yes, this is normal for the Platinum version. My tutorial clearly shows the MainConcept choice only under the "Vegas Pro" paragraph. So I am not sure why you are confused by that. Your Platinum 9 can do WMV and SonyAVC in custom mode.
