soon to have my second dvx100 so carrying on the cameras is no longer going to be an option... going to have to check them....

I have looked around and there are lots of cheap cheap cases...but wondering if they would hold up for checked baggage...

can anyone recomend a good travel case and also let me know any brands or types I might want to stay away from ?

Hi wilson, I just wanted to caution you against checking in cameras... Generally a bad idea. The Airline is only responsible up to $100 per lost bag. So if your case ends up in a dumpster behind a Petco store, or decorating someone's mantle, the airline will cut you a fat $100 check for both DVX's.

A sound idea would be to buy a larger backpack. I can get two DVX's, two HVX's, or two Z1U's into my Kata Panda Case that I bought for $140. It also takes an insertrolley, is carry-on legal, and fits overhead or below the seat in front. You put one DVX in the camera compartment on top, and the 2nd DVX in the bottom compartment where the laptop normally goes. They both travel fully padded, no rubbing metal. It leaves room for 10 tapes, 4 batteries, 2 chargers, shotgun mic, wireless kit, white balance card, and toothpaste, needed for 14+ hr. LA > London flights :)

Have you got a link for that case, Rush? I'd like to see one.

Don't check your camera through normal baggage no matter what case it is in. Use "Specai Baggage or Handling" I use Clydsdale cases for sensitive gear when I travel . I would strongly suggest you find another way to get it there rather thatn put it in thebaggage compartment unless it is being "handled" Ship it Fedex insured to your location at least you will know it is gonna get there and not be damaged at the best or dissappear at the worst.

The best possible solution, IMO. Whenever I go on location, if I'm not driving there myself (or having a company van/truck move my kit) I always use FedEx. Cuz whenever they break stuff (once per show) they reimburse for its full value...

...and use hard cases (Pelicans) as much as possible. Maybe I'm being neolithic about it, but nothing beats a quality hard case with proper cushioning.

Rush,

Thanks for your detailed descriptiion of the kata backpack. I've been looking for something like this and like Kata bags in general, but your description of what you can carry in it was all I needed to hear, to know this will meet my needs. Just placed my order.

By the way, this is just my second post. I just discovered the site Yesterday, but with all the wealth of information here, I'll visit here often.

thanks exactly what I was looking for .....ordering one now  I hadn't thought about a backpack.... because of the rubbing... awesome.... and don't have to resort to checking backage ......and will be so much easier carrying all my gear

You're welcome :) Cool thing about that bag too, is that when I get tired of using it as a backpack, I just zip in the straps, bolt on the carrying strap, and carry it as a shoulder-bag. The front zippered pouch will hold a full 42" Photoflex multidisc reflector (folded, ofcourse).
