Inexpensive Flexible LED Lights: Travor, FalconEyes, Soonwell = Good Skin Tones?

Those New Inexpensive Flexible LED Lights: by Travor, FalconEyes, Soonwell... Do They Have Full Spectrum Color? (Usable Skin Tones)

Yes, I've read every word of the recent 22-page long thread about the new, cheaper flexible light panels - it's a great thread with much information!

But... The only samples I've seen (both stills, product examples, and even YouTube videos) show the products used in just a few limited scenarios. It is impossible to tell if the colors are truly usable enough.

So please, could a few of you who have courageously put yourselves out there (and bought these panels) give us some additional real-world examples? I'm ready to buy 4-6 of these panels now. But I don't want to get yet another light that is really "close" to daylight (high CRI), but the color spectrum has "spikes" that can't be filtered out. Most of the cheaper LED's have spikes in the green or blue area that leaves reds looking weak - or they are too blue or green. These new lights look like the solution to my lighting problems and the answer to a long-time wish: an inexpensive, portable, lightweight lighting system that makes people / skin tones look good and realistic. CRI ratings for these lights vary (90 - 95?), and user reviews are also inconsistent, so some examples - or comparisons to the Westcott, etc. - would be so helpful.

Even if a little filtration is needed - no problem. But sometimes even with filtration, the image, and especially skin tones look "washed" with another color tint: green, magenta, blue... the skin looks just a little bit "off." If you have any of these lights, after some usage, do you think they look "good?" Especially with skin tones?

Please - could some of you brave folks with these lights show some real examples of these lights? Could you please show examples NOT overpowered by window light - but rather just the lights used with no daylight - to show what they are capable of in studio or location shoots? A three light setup would be so helpful to see. I need these lights now, but don't want to spend $800. - $1200. without knowing I'll be able to use them and not have clients ask if the color is "a little off." It is just that I've already spent about $1,000. more than that on previous LED lights that have been disappointing.

Thanks, and I hope that this additional knowledge is something that many of you would benefit from.

Hi,

I've written a long-ish flex light review of the Soonwell/FalconEyes RX-18 (both daylight and bicolor version). They're quite nice, I haven't noticed anything off. Here's a few screen grabs of our Canon C300 mkII, ungraded C-log for the first pics, from a shoot we just did in remote Alaska on fisherman. And ungraded C-log3 for the bottom two. There's a variety of daylight in the room but the subjects were all primarily lit with the flex lights.

slavikb,
I hadn't seen your review - sorry I had missed this.
Looking at your examples, I see no problem at all in using these lights for most, even more-critical, work. These are good representations of what I was questioning, and I can see that skin tones and hair color are very solid and usable. They are far superior to some of the earlier LED fixtures I had purchased (and had to stop using). Some of those were rated CRI>90 to CRI>95, but they were far less usable than the FalconEyes now are.
Thanks so much for posting these samples, and I believe that I'll be very pleased with them.
Best wishes,
Randall

Before investing in a system I'd want to know the TLCI data, or at least see a color chip chart test, ideally both.

I agree.
Also, I can't vouch for the truth of the claim, but this quote is from a listing on Ebay for the RX-18T Daylight version, if it is anything close to accurate... (?)

"high CRI >95 Ra / TLCI 95 Qa for natural color rendering on cameras"

Very intrigued. I'm considering ditching my current key setup for a couple of the 18t's, but if they are way off from my Aputures I'll most likely pass. They tick so many boxes...which would be negated by dialing in incompatible color temps and color spikes.

Has anyone used these in conjunction with Aputures LS1's and LS1/2 's ?

Thanks
