Industry Standard? Why Mac?

I'm an Apple Guy - have been since it's beginning in the early '80s. I love
my Macs ... have three or four personal Macs at the moment - two are
Intel chipped.

I continually hear about Macs being 'the industry standard' in computers.
Why? Why not PCs? ... is my entire premise wrong?

I wouldn't say that Macs are an industry standard. They rose to a prominent reputation in the graphics world because a Mac was the first computer you could use and get a true WYSIWYG workflow from computer design to final printed product. That has always been my understanding why people say "Mac are better for graphics." Even though PCs have caught up. Anymore it's a choice between personal preference, or application specificity (meaning if you want to use Final Cut, you can't buy a PC).

My take....

I agree with krestofre, Its all about what you want to use, and what works best with what your editing.

I use to work at an ad agency in Seattle and Microsoft was our client. Every ad we did for them was done on a Mac. Sweet irony.

Typically things become the "standard" because of either better quality or better hype. In a case like Macs it started with better quality graphics (it's true). But PCs have caught up. In a case like VHS vs. Betamax it was better hype. Which we will soon see repeated with all the Blueray and HD-DVD stuff.

Concievably you could run OS X on a PC. The same or more power and all your favorite Apple apps for half the price.

OSX's GUI awakens creativity, on a PC it's very miserable. I have a Safari theme on Mozilla PC and it makes me feel better.

Hype. PC hardware has surpassed Apple by far.

please see: intel switch.

It WAS the operating system. And now it's Final Cut support for video. Too bad about that.

I did that with my friends computer, he saved 3,000 dollars by having me build the system, not apple. It runs OSX perfect.

How long ago? AMD or INtel? Can ya PM me the exact specs? I'm about to build my Hackintosh next week.

I think most creative people feel more at ease with a mac.

That is a statement that makes no sense. And i hear it stated CONSTANTLY from lots of people. Dudes, they are computers.... thats like sayting, "snap On" tools are for creative people, and Crafts men is for business.... Same crap......

I think it's best to be bilingual. One of my clients turned away a couple of PC centric applicants last week because they couldn't handle working with Macs. Likewise, I know some freelancers that refuse to work on a PC.

Why limit yourself and your income by being a platform zealot?

Yes. Being bilingual will get you rather far. Clients don't often work on Macs, so being able to use both or have both at your disposal is even better.

For me... uhm... well the only thing I want OS X for IS Final Cut Studio; the rest I just don't need.

And thats something that i've never really understood, why are people so hellbent on HAVING to use FCP? I know its preference, but is it really worth the extra weight? I am a Premiere user myself, and having worked with FCP in the past, I can't understand what significant differences it offers that would justify someone paying that much for a Mac system, just to run FCP when Premiere offers the same features at a cheaper pricepoint. A friend recently cut a film in FCP and by the end nearly wanted to kill himself after all the rendering and waiting...rendering...waiting...incompatibilites...rendering...etc. The whole time we just kept telling him "Ya know Premiere doesnt have to do that!"

P2 Integration. Nuff said for me. Premiere is WAY behind on the workflow, and I ain't paying for Raylight.

I think you are missing the point, both the MAC OS and the PC OS will give you very different user experiences, nothing to do with the Hardware.... The user interface has been the key selling point for the MAC for years... You can beleive the pc harware is better, faster, cheaper...whatever... for many people, the user experience is more important. And as a matter of fact, the Mac has been a favorite with creative people...

The PC hardware is better on a factual level. Mac Hardware is always behind. Still on GeForce7600 Cards? Come on. We're at 8800GTS and on the brink of the new Radeon wave. SLI technology, CrossXFire...

That said, I don't see anyone large number of Mac users switching to PC any time soon. Once it's installed, it's pretty hard to find a good enough reason to switch.

One-outs like me? I'm gung-ho about frankenstein projects that save me money.

I dont detect a "user experince". i see folders, and files, Mac Or PC.... my point is its the same crap. lol.
