Has anyone used an industrial highbay fluorescent fixture for set lighting?
Here's the idea: Lithonia, among others, makes an 18"x48" 6 lamp T-5 54W T5 fixture (IB 654L). Drillspot advertises it for $230 without lamps, which you can get for about $15 a piece or another $90 dollars for a total of $320.
The postives are lots of light at a good price; plus being a 4' long fixture means that it will be a softer light than the typical 24" biax fixture of the same wattage. I imagine it will be brighter than the biax type also because the lamps are more spread out and don't block themselves as much. The $15 T 5's appear to be CRI 85.
The negatives (compared to the Coollights biax, for instance) are that it needs to be adpated, at some price and effort. At a minimum it needs a mounting solution, and then it could use a grid and/or barndoors, although it is available in a "narrow beam" configuration.
