Indoor and Outdoor Interview setup with battery power (K6?)

Hi all,

I'm not a fillmmaker, but I would like to get advice on mics for indoor and outdoor interviews. I'll be recording to a digital PCM recorder, and need a mic that is battery powered.

My research and reading over the last few weeks brought me to the thought of buying into the ME/K6 system. I was planning on getting a ME64 for indoors and an ME66 for outdoors.

I won't be shooting at the same time usually (though I may take some stills), so the mics should be able to get quite close to the subject (though they are non-pros, so I'd like to keep the mics as far away as possible for their own comfort).

Though I'm not shooting video at the moment, I bet I will be within two years. as such, I'd like to buy once, and buy something I can build on.

Looking at the stickies, I'd probably get something other than the ME mics, but its the battery powered issue (and the modularity) which attracts me.

If I could only get one of these mics...for indoors and out would the ME64 be ok for outdoors? I've heard more than one poster stating not to use the 66 indoors (most of the places I'll be recording in will have hard surfaces).

Lastly....can anyone comment on the ME65? Thank you

I'd just avoid the ME series all together. Rode NTG-2 will suit you fine outdoors. Its far from my mic of choice indoors, but its also works wihtout sounding like total crap. Its not exactly the tightest pattern among shotguns. If you can swing the budget though, I would get a seperate hypercardioid for indoor use like the oktava or akg ck93. I use the ck93 and it sounds great. No matter what mic you use it wont sound good unless you have that mic up close. I'd boom from above just above and in front of their head (about where the frame line would be if you were shooting video). Keep them engaged with you and they will forget its even there. If your outdoor interviews are going to be in an area with any wind at all (even a light breeze), look into some sort of wind protection. Personally I'd just get a full zeppelin and be done with it. Slipons are cheap and convenient though so I would look at those as well. Hope this helps!

Thanks Jeff,

I was looking at the Oktava, but it is phantom power only is it not? Same as the CK93....no?

Instead of booming, I was planning on handholding with a grip. I was going to get a Rycote Softie...(I dont want to do a DIY, and I thought I might not need a full blimp). Space and portability is also very important to me, I thought a blimp might be too bulky.

How many others feel that the Rode NTG-2 is better than the ME66?

For your use this is an excellent choice.

The ME65 is super-cardioid designed for close work and has an integral pop shield. But I think the ME 64 and ME 66 would be the best for you.
