indiFOCUS sent to unit testers.

Focus This!

DVXuser Sponsor
Sent out the indiFOCUS's to the unit testers Friday. Will be getting feedback from them soon.

As for those watching the project, here is one mounted on a DVX-100a.

Will be setting up the web-site this week at www.indifocus.com, and will begin taking orders on September 18, 2005.
Cost, $299.99. There are no rings or modifications needed for your camera, and it is constructed out of aircraft grade aluminum.

It is configured for a standard 15mm rod system. If you have a non-standard size rod system, please contact me with specifications so that the rod mount can be machined for your needs.

Finally, after order is placed, I can ship within 7 days. Standard UPS ground costs $15.95 shipping and handling. (I am in Iowa, so it is 4 days at the longest in transit.)

Finally, thanks to everyone that is testing them! I hope that they make your shoots a little easier!

Looks really good, looking forward to testers responses.
Also it looks like it can be used with any lens...is that correct?

First, Taylor, it will take any lens. In fact, it is designed to adapt to any lens from 0.0 to 6" diameter. (In other words from a lens that is no size to 6" in diamter. )
It also allows the height to be raised if you are using a shallow DOF adaptor. Because it doesn't need any rings for the lens, you can quickly change lens, camera, as the need arises.
Secondly, Dmitri, this is NOT the $69 follow focus. Mine is constructed of aircraft grade aluminum--.25" thickness on the angle mounting brackets, which allows it to take considerable amounts of force...more than should EVER be placed near your camera! It has a white marking disc, like an industry standard follow focus. With a grease pencil, which is supplied, you can make marks and wipe them clear.
What the indifocus was designed to be is a low cost alternative to the chrozeils and cavisions. It uses industry standard mounting, uses the same type of marking disc, and is durable. There are no cheap plastic knobs, gears, or doo-hickeys...and no wooden trun knobs, and no pixelated pictures. I believe that the indiFOCUS is the superior device for independent film makers that are looking for a low-cost, durable, well-constructed, industry-standard device for under $300.

John, as there is no modifications needed to the DVX-100a's lens, there should be no problem mounting a mattebox on the rails that support the indiFOCUS.

NoCa$h, if by bulky you mean that it is made of durable aluminum, then it is. If by too bulky you mean that there is enough substance to the product that it will take whatever is thrown at it during filming, ans still survive, then it is.

I don't know if anyone has noticed this or tried it, but these type of follow focus units can also be used on DVX for very slow zoom creeps by placing in ton the zoom ring and removing the pin. Works best if you have a speed crank with extension to get a very even movement.

what about using on a SLR 35mm lens with a micro35? seems a bit cheesy to use no gears, can you make it with gears?

I think that this is a very good design. Gears are great if you only use one lens. I have a Canon XL2 with three lenses, and this design will be usable no matter which lens I happen to be using. I think Focus This has come up with a very cool product. It might not be for everybody, but I am definitely looking forward to trying it out.

Bump. Any updates on this? I saw the website (indifocus.com) is halfway up. My M2 is arriving next week and my next bit will be a FF. Oh yeah, does have hard stops? I can live without at this price, but I may as well dream.

We are utilizing an indiFocus evaluation kit on a TLC package next week and have been using it to good effect on a news string since this thread was started.

My overall reaction is that the unit is a solid alternative to a more expensive geared set-up. More when I'm on a machine that I can trust with a prolonged reply!

Fox,
The website will be fully finctional on Friday 8PM CDT. Hard stops, as an option, are available for an additional $30. Just completed a set to send to Erik this weekend...along with a new rod mount that have changes suggested by him.

Focus,

Sweet. Just checked out the site (having forgotten to check this thread for a few days). Looks pretty awesome. Can't wait to read some reviews, but looks good to me.
