IndiFocus Gearless Follow Focus

I am intrigued by this product. Yes, because of its price ($299), but also because it doesn't require any modification to the lens. Does anybody have any thoughts on it? Can anybody comment on its overall performance? And how about compatibility with the HVX?

I was a beta tester and now an owner of the production model. It works great and it's a nice combination to use with your set of still lenses on your 35mm adaptors!

We use this on our Z1U, DVX, HVX and CineAlta shoots. It works well on infinite ring cameras in particular by introducing a bit of drag to the loose focus rings.

Marking disk and hard-stop kit make it possible to repeat even complicated moves.

I'm holding out for the Foxi. Mechanical linkage is great but you can't pull focus from a crane or steadi-cam flyer that way.

That's good to hear, Norm, my adapter arrives in approx. a week! Which adapter did you beta test with (if you did test with an adapter)?

I'm using the IndieFOCUS with my XL2 and I love it! It works well with all three of my lenses. Tim, the creator of the IndieFOCUS is a great guy and he'll go out of his way to help you.

Yeah, the indiFOCUS is a great piece, especially if you are looking for an affordable, efficient, follow focus device. Plus, like KHendrix2 said, Tim IS the man!

This looks like a good product at a great price. I have a tripod and the camera (of course), what else would I need to buy to make this follow focus work? Do I need rods? How do the rods attach to the camera or tripod? Where do I buy these additional items?

Thanks!

Ask and ye shall shop. We are full-line dealers for Cavision's popular RS15IIM iris rod / base plate and camera riser system. We're also dealers for the indiFOCUS gearless and geared follow focus system.

Do you have the rods in stock? Also, where are there pictures/reviews of the geared indfocus system - I have yet to see it, but it looks great. Also, is this the same price as the gearless one? I know you can swith one over to the other, so do I have to buy the gearless and then buy the geared upgrade ontop of that?

I just got my indifocus today and I have some major concerns. Other than being a real tight fit on the HVX, unless I;m setting it up wrong, it completely blocks the iris controls making the iris wheel inaccessable. Doesn't seem to be a problem on my DVX-100 but I'm not so sure about the HVX. I just can't get the friction wheel close enough to the focus ring to get it to work right.

Noah,

We regularly stock Cavision RS15IIm rods. Even when we're out of stock, they ship to us next day via FedEx 2-Day. Upon order, you should have them in less than one-week on the outside. B&H prices are a bit lower, but they only order a couple times a month. That's where the 2 - 4 week "backorder" lag sometimes comes into play.

Our indiFOCUS pages are being rebuilt with some new images from Studio 4. The gearless universal version is $299 + S/H, the geared version is $389 + S/H including friction wheel (universal) geared module and two lens gears.

JesterJJZ,

The HVX model is shipping with an extension bracket. It had to do with Studio 4 having one set of pre-production dimensions from Panasonic and the shorter lens train in the release models.

If you did not order specifically for the HVX (I know, it's supposed to be Universal...) then contact Tim Ovel at Studio 4 for the extension bracket. Should help you out!

Not that I have, but Tim should have a photo of the HVX with extension in the days to come. It does exist and we will include them in our indiFOCUS HVX kits.

Cheers,

I just got my indifocus and I'm a little disappointed it does not just fit to my HVX immediately. There is no mention of this problem on the indifocus website and there's no mention of an extension bracket even existing. I still think this is a good product, but I sure would have liked it to deliver its promise without the stress and hassle of thinking I just blew 300 bucks. It appears as if all of us HVX'ers are going to have to drop a little more coin to make this thing work for us. I'm still excited to use the system, I just wish their website made its functionality with the HVX much clearer. I sent an email to Tim this morning and I anxiously await his response (thanks for that "heads up" overland).

indiFOCUS is a great system - I'm pleased with the results we've achieved with ours. On our site, the HVX will have a separate page dedicated to it or a pulldown option to assure that the bracket is included.

I don't believe that Tim plans to charge more for the longer bracket, it's just a different piece based on the L-bracket that is included at $299. I'll follow-up with him on this as well!

Just got a message from Tim. He will be sending out the extension bracket ASAP at no extra cost. Sweet. Just in time for the weekend shoots!
