Indieslider or dolly track?

I'm on the fence about which of these "dolly" solutions would
be best for me - Indieslider (DIY) or skateboard dolly with track?

Traditionally I've used a dolly track (usually two, 8 foot PVC pipes
with a skateboard dolly). I've never used the Indieslider, but after
reading the DIY thread it looks really good (and portable).

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of both?

Thanks.

Peter

i know it costs more but a good dolly with good wheels and real track is such a nice thing to have. and when you get on big budget sets you will feel right at home. I use PVC occasionally but I really don't like to.

Have you used an MSE doorway dolly on any of your shoots? If not you may want to give pneumatic tire dollies a chance. I've found that over the past 10 years I've shot in homes, offices, and factories...all of which have flat and level surfaces that are perfect for a tire dolly without track. Even asphalt/concrete I've been able to shoot on. Some of our sample footage shows some of these shots.

Adding sandbags or a rider also helps smooth out the bumps in a surface. At worst, standard 2x6s can act as a track and are cheap, convenient, and disposable.

Thanks everyone.

I've been leaning towards the Microdolly - though it is quite an investment. It has
two big things going for it - portability (since I'm usually a one-man-band) and
when I work with other crew (who have on-set experience), they feel right at home
working with a proper dolly. Makes the how experience much easier.

I haven't worked with doorway dolly. Always seemed a little cumbersome. The
dollytrax does look quite compact though. Worth considering.
