INDEPENDENT FILM DISTRIBUTION

Hey guys, I was wondering if you can help me out. I have been in pre-production since May for my feature length film entiteld "The Ghost of Gallager." I will be shooting the film from August 2nd through August 17th. Now the question that comes to mind is distribution. How do I go about it? Who should I contact? The genre of the film is horror. Please if you guys can assist me in any way it will be greatly appreciated.

First step is to call distributors and ask them what they want, and what you'd have to do to your film to make them want to buy it. Ignoring this step is the reason almost all micro-budget indie films fail.

Go to ifilm.com and order a copy of the Hollywood Distributor's Directory. Search through its pages for any distributors who list "horror" as one of their chosen categories. Then just call them, ask to talk to an acquisitions executive, and tell 'em just what you told us. They will greatly appreciate the call and the chance to "fix" your film before you shoot it in a way that may make it less marketable for them. Distributors WANT your product, and they want you to succeed at it, because they will make a heck of a lot more off your project than you will.

So ask 'em what they want/need in a horror film, and then do your best to give it to 'em.

You can also attend the IFM which is the Independent Film Market which is held in September/October. You get to screen your project to potential distribitors - it is a wild time. www.ifp.org

I was wondering if getting an agent is something that is required? How do you get one?

Getting an agent is very simple -- you just have to have a product that he/she can easily sell. :)

If you don't have a product the agent can sell, then getting an agent is impossible.

For producers, an agent is known as a producer's rep, or sometimes an entertainment attorney will act as a producer's rep.

That parallels the music business too, back in the day, our ELaw (Entertainment Lawyer) was everything for us, agent, rep, consultant, manager. It was wonderful. (sometimes that's very bad, conflict of interests etc, but in our case it was perfect)
