Incredible lightweight crane, body or tripod mounted

This is an incredibly simple idea, very well created... I think it would be an incredible DIY project.

The crane pole is either supported by a body-harness or on a tripod. Go to each crane model page on the link and look at the videos. It will inspire.

Only problem, what is a good material for the primary crane body pole? Strong, long and lightweight??

Any ideas?

Depends on how big your camera is, but aluminum should fit the bill. Either a box or a tube. Dimensions would vary by weight and length. Does anybody have a good calculator for that kind of thing? It would be nice to know how long you can make it before you risk bending or breaking the pole.

You can see the pole bend in the video. With other stationary crane, there is usually a cable that runs from the camera end to a peak and then back to the user to help with the bending.

I thought it would be great, even in a slightly shorter version, to stand on top of a small platform at the side of the dancefloor during some of the event videography that I do and pan over the top of the dancefloor. Would get some great shots of grandma "gettin her jiggy on."

In case you haven't seen it, HomeBuiltStabilizers.com has some great pictures of cranes, from simple to elaborate. Check it out here.

And I think the harnass that makes your body the jib base is incredibly brilliant, especially when you look at the videos and see how well it works.

I want to make this!

I don't know if it's cheaper than buying a new piece of aluminum from a metal shop, but I've heard of people using those long poles used to clean pools. One plus is they are anodized already.

OK.. Im going to have a look at some pool poles,.. see if any of them are rigid enough, or may need a support cable down the middle.
