inconspicuous sound setup

I need to meet with people at their homes (probably at a kitchen table or similar), as a kind of pre-interview for a video. I want to ask their permission to record the audio from the meeting (with a digital sound recorder), in case something usable is said. While I don't mind showing them the mic, etc., I want to keep it as out-of-the-way as possible, so they're not self-conscious. Right now I only have a shotgun, and I'm wondering how to set it up so I get decent sound but don't have it in their faces.

Re: inconspicuous sound setup

Just get your mic on a boom pole stand and position it as close to them as possible avoiding other unwated sounds. And get the mic close enough to wear it wont show on screen. Maybe overhead or underneath depending on your framing. Thats what I do and never really had a problem. Hope this is helpful info.
