Incandescent bulbs more efficient than LED'S!

oOoh, sounds like it may be relatively inexpensive and easy to produce too if there aren't electronic components. Though I wonder how bulb life is and whether it scales up to high power outputs well. I wonder what implications this has for size and safety. Must be a significant redesign using very different materials to redirect and use that heat without significantly reducing life. 40% efficiency would be really impressive, that's about 300 lumens/watt!

The math is also very convenient because the 3-4x equivalency you're used to comparing HMI/LED/FLO to tungsten could now be used to compare new-incandescent to HMI/LED/FLO :)
I look forward to the 300W lights that look like 1.2k HMIs without any of the electronic complexity...

I guess they haven't broken 6.6% efficiency yet :( I guess that's about equivalent to a CFL though.


That's a much better source. It says:
Whereas the luminous efficiency of conventional incandescent lights is between 2 and 3 percent, that of fluorescents (including CFLs) is between 7 and 15 percent, and that of most compact LEDs between 5 and 15 percent, the new two-stage incandescents could reach efficiencies as high as 40 percent, the team says.
The first proof-of-concept units made by the team do not yet reach that level, achieving about 6.6 percent efficiency

My 50W LED fresnel pumps up about the same amount of light as my 500W tungsten fresnel, but better optics on that one can account for a 2x improvement, so, 3% efficiency for the tungsten light and 15% for the LED sound reasonable.
If they can make incandescent match the efficiency levels of LEDs without compromising quality of the light, flicker, etc, it will be a big deal.
