In Camera or In Post?

Hi Guys

I shoot my first short with my new DVX tonight! Horror Genre. Wooh!! Im excited. Can't wait. It's going to be very dark and shadowy.

So my question to you experienced DVX guys is should I shoot it with the master ped down low and get black blacks in camera. Or should I shoot it more even and bring it all down in post?

I am leaning towards doing it in post just because it will give me some room to work with, especially as it is my first time with the camera.

What do you guys think?

lets see some screengrabs! Im shooting a zombie music video in a month or so, and im trying to round up some visual styles and themes from the zombie genre.

I really don't understand how people shoot that way, "shoot now think later" type of deal. In my opinion trying to get the best possible outcome out of your cam and doing touch ups in post is a more stable way of shooting. With all the gamma features and different settings dvx offers i think it is very profitable to get the best results in camera. After all, how do you know you have achieved the look you aimed for if you are shooting "even" with post production in mind. If you as a director/cinematographer know the exact look you are going for, editing flexibility should not matter. I am not a great fanatic of the post pro process but if i wanted to shoot "blank" then i would just get a Canon :).

I will definately post some once it is shot.

The best thing for zombies I think is, horrid skin and dark around the eyes.
Check out the film "Zombie" that has some very nasty looking zombies and a great scene where a zombie attacks a shark underwater. excellent stuff.

I have a specific look in mind, and I want to experiment with the camera. But as it is my first shoot with this camera,I didnt want to get stuck with some thing that I can't correct. So I was asking for some advice.
Obviously I will be lighting and composing the shots the best that I can. Im not planning on just sticking the camera on and recording then hoping for the best in editing.

Re: In Camera or In Post?

Obviously the best look will be in camera, however it can be very difficult to achieve a look in some cases. If you can achieve the look in camera then of course you shoot it like that...

Re: In Camera or In Post?

seems like with the sampling limitations and compression of DV, in camera should be the best option for picture quality.

"I have a specific look in mind, and I want to experiment with the camera"

So are you wanting to experiment on set or should you experiment prior to shooting so that you know what your camera will do in that scenario?

Plenty of room for experimentation on set however I think you ought to do a little pre-planning and test out some of the shots you're thinking about. I'm all for getting it in the camera, however there are always times when post processing is necessary. Look at the popularity now of DI's

Well it's all done now.

I shot it last night. A lot of what I thought I would end up doing in post was done in the camera. The images this thing captures is phenomenal.

Now the editing begins.

Will post grabs soon
