In and Out Points

Does anyone know if it's possible to set multiple in and out points on the same clip? Right now, I'm only able to set one in and one out point per clip. If I want to use sections to the same clip, FCP forces me to drag it to the time-line and edit it there. Any solution?

I have always done it that way. I sometimes make a second sequence file and use it as a "scratch sequence" to edit clips into a particular order. Then when I have it the way I like it, I cut and paste it onto the other sequence. You could also use markers, but I don't know how helpful that would be.

That's actually a really good question. I haven't thought about it, but that would be really useful. Maybe at NAB they'll introduce a new FCP and that'll be a feature.

You can also drop markers at points of interest the in the clip. I doubt FCP will allow for multiple instances of I/O's because it won't know which sets of I/O to "use" when you hit the button to edit the clip to the timeline.

Pretty much what the last comment said, you can't have multiple I/O markers because then your NLE won't know what to cut in. I haven't used many of the PC based NLEs, but I'm not aware of any one that would allow such a thing.

You could go the sub-clip route. Being that you didn't really describe the footage, I'd say re-log the footage and log it better such that you have smaller clips. Otherwise just look through the short cuts. Using the keyboard short cuts you can fly back to the clip/bin pretty fast and quickly zip over to the next spot and mark a fresh in and out marker. Break open the keyboard manager and really get a feel for what's there for you to exploit, there is quite a bit. Good luck.

cheers.

Ok, here's how it works, a clip can only have one In point and on Out point. Workflow is, open the Master Clip in the Viewer, set the In and Out points you want need, drop it in the Timeline to use. Still using the same Master Clip (not the copy you just made in the Timeline, which is now a totally seperate copy) set new In and Out points and drop that new copy into the Timeline.

Remember, once you drop it in the Timeline, it is it's own independent copy of the clip seperate from the Master copy in the Browser that you captured. All NLEs work this way.

I think the mistake you're making, from what I can understand, is that once you drop a clip into the Timeline, you're trying to "re-use" that clip again. Don't, that's just bad editing practice. If you need a second clip from the same Master clip, open it from the Browser into the Viewer, make new In and Out points (this will NOT effect any previous "copies" you dropped into the Timeline already) and drop that into the Timeline, poof, you now have a new independent copy in the Timeline.

You can, once a copy is in the Timeline, change the In and Out points of THAT SPECIFIC INDEPENDENT COPY of the clip by opening that specific clip in the Timeline into the Viewer window, or by any of the other methods to change a clips In and Outs in the Timeline.

I think you're getting the Master Clip and the independent copies made in the Timeline confused.

Hope this helps.
