Improvised Music Video

I'm going to be shooting a music video for a friend soon, but it's a different kind of music video. We want to write the music to the concept of the video, while not making it just a score and taking away from the music... So the video will actually follow the music for most of it, but in certain parts, the music will follow. There's a particular part where the music dies, there is some dialog from a character, then the music will need to sync to a few quick cuts... That's part of the idea, the best way I can describe it...
Since I can't put in song timing, but I have a solid idea of shots that I want in the video, how should I start this process?
If we shoot all the scenes and then write and hear the music, it may not mesh well... and if we write the music and then shoot the scenes we could have the same problem...
I was suggesting to write one song as kind of a rough draft, and then start shooting the video, and modify the song later, but I still won't be able to write in the timing in the screenplay, so I'm not sure how it's going to work.
Any suggestions to make this process less chaotic? I would appreciate it.
