Improving sound in Premiere

Hey guys. I've recently finished the final cut of my first short. I now want to improve the sound. I've removed noise, but I want the sound to have the qualities of the mixes we hear theatrically and on DVD. Does anyone know a good way to do this. I am using Adobe Premiere. Am I just supposed to tweak the reverb settings? I tried that but didn't like the results as they seemed to distort the audio. How would you guys suggest making the sound punchier?

Thanks!

I may be wrong, but if you really want to tweak the sounds the way you want, you’ll need to use an outside program. I suggest Adobe Audition, very good program and a lot of things you can do with sound.

AFMNA10 you're right. it need help outside program. you cannot using premiere to make perfect sound. it just mixing your sound and your video file.
adobe audition1.5 is a good and simple program to fix it.
maybe you could try sony soundforge 8.0. i'm using sony to make theatrical sound.

What's the best way to remove noise? Do you just manually chop it out of the audio line?

There are many ways to reduce noise, but it's difficult to remove it completely without distorting what you want to keep. There are different techniques for different situations. They include: equalization, gating, noise reduction filter (or other frequency-based techniques), etc. And of course, there are many ways to prevent the noise from being recorded in the first place.

You can learn more about them in Jay Rose's audio books.
