Improving smooth-ness with 503/Pro5 head

I know a lot of people have the Manfrotto 503 or the vinten Pro5 tripod head. Ive got one and whilst doing filming yesterday, I decided I wasnt very happy with the smoothness, it was quite sticky and lumpy.

I found a nice little adjustment that can really improve the performance of the head.

Take the head off the sticks and turn it over.

There is a moulded grey bowl with the m10 thread sticking out of the middle. Around the bowl are three screws, set quite deep down. You will need a flat screwdriver.

Stick the scredriver into one of the holes and tighten it up a little bit. Do the same with all the other screws. try to adjust them so they are at an even depth in the screw holes.

Make sure you dont over tighten caus it locks the pan together totally if you go to tight.

This removes the slack in the pan movement and makes it much tighter, and since doing this, smooth movements are much easier.

I did do that today to my tripod w/ the 503HDV head and it really did help take any kickback out of panning with the head.
