Improving lateral sound rejection on with the H4N?

Hi guys,

I´m very new to sound and I´d like an advice on a hypothetical situation....you´re interviewing a person in a round press full of people and you´re only allowed to stay about 10ft away with an H4N and an NTG3 and you cannot boom. Is there a particular set of settings on the H4N that would improve lateral sound rejection? I mean, I´ve seen settings like "mid", "side", "comp", etc.

thanks in advance

Rafa

Are you' asking for a way to narrow the pickup pattern of the mic using software?
As far as I know, that's unfortunately not possible for any equipment unless you have data from more than one source, as in two or more mics, and they would have to be in an extremely specific arrangement (this is partly how the CS3e and super Cmit works, manipulating the similarities and differences between multiple mic capsules to create more rejection).

A quick lav or plant mic is out of the question? If so, then the only other option is a shotgun with more directionality, like the two mentioned above or longer shotguns like the MKH70 (the new model of MKH816). They can be hard to control though, and the difference may not be game changing.
