Impressive Newbie film!

I know these guys and they shared it with me. This is their first attempt at anything other than test shots, learning the 7D. I must say, I am very impressed. Going to be involved in the feature.

To be honest, as a first timer films, it's nothing special. Sorry man, but nothing impressed me.

I mean when a newbie puts money into their production and gets a high prod value look to their film, people see it as impressive, especially to their friends. They're probably going "man that's totally awesome! It looks like a hollywood film!" which will inevitably boost their ego and push them to put money into this thing.

Maybe it's because I'm a filmmaker, but nothing impressed me. I mean it just looks like another newbie film. They had full army gear and guns... that's about all that was impressive.

Where are they supposed to be? I mean they either had contacts, or they put money out for full army gear and guns, but then they lack on other details. The insurgents feel out of place in a forest. Also, I've seen special effects on voluntary films come out much better.

Not to mention there's no story to it. I mean what happened? We watch them walking around for a few minutes to some hip hop beats, and they kill some insurgents wearing bath robes at the end? Something that was 6 minutes should have been cut down to 2 minutes. Regular newbie film.

I agree with Jon

They do show an aptitude but there are tons of missing elements that would work better for me.

sometimes its better to leave out special effects...

it looks like it stared some airsoft players. so thats how they had the gear im guessing.

def wouldnt be better with a story line... its a start

I agree with the comments, although the 2 of them did everything. No other actors. And no money spent on it. They just got the camera, so maybe that.

These were test shots, believe it or not, that they played around with and got carried away, so there was no real intentional storyline. The storyline is coming.

I was impressed by the production value and they did a good job with the end title sequence and the muzzle flashes for the most part. I think it's a great start for newbies.

Also agree with other comments though. Even as test footage... while the shots look nice due to the hardware used, I think a goal for newbies should be to make the film visually exciting if you used a 10 year old Sony Handicam. What I mean is, the shots themselves were boring and dragged on too long, and the edits were long and mediocre. That said, it is a FIRST TIME FILM - so that's ok. Just something to work on - need MORE shots, BETTER shots, more dynamic shots, and better edits. And some sort of intriguing narrative, like you said was coming... I was bored within 30 seconds. The whole thing should have been 2 minutes.

But still, great job starting, much work to be done and lots to work on - but that's the fun part :)

I think the question is, is it impressive as a newbie film? It feels like a regular newbie film. Editing problems, story problems, problems with music, characters, pacing, etc...

I think an impressive newbie film is a film that doesn't feel like a newbie film.
