Importing VHS into FCP

Hi everyone,

I have some footage on VHS that I recorded a long time ago for an instructional video.

I have a VHS VCR and want to know how to digitize VHS into FCP. I have two options:

* hook up a DV camcorder to my VCR, and record the VHS footage onto miniDV tape. Then digitise the camcorder into FCP in the normal manner via firewire.

* or, buy a cheap converter box.

Would you experience more generation loss doing the first method? Or would doing both methods lose exactly the same generation loss?

Thanks guys

Once the footage is digital, there won't be any noticable generation loss. I think your quickest option is to import it once. Some cameras will allow you to pass the signal through your firewire connection. This is probably your best bet.

Otherwise, its quicker to buy a converter. Of course, if you don't have the budget, and you cam won't pass through, then you could go the mini-dv option.

If you have a DV camcorder, just use the pass-thru option. take the tape out. works great. you may have to make a menu setting on the camcorder, like "DV Out".
