Is there a way that I can just import photos from iPhoto into a FCP project? I tried but can't seem to figure out how to select a photo(s) then bring them into FCP.

I like to create an album... then select all the photos in that album and EXPORT (usually at the given size... maybe if I have time I'll change their size a bit. (Be careful - if you batch export from iPhoto you can jack up your portrait/landscape by changing the size globally)
Anyway - export to a media drive and then drag that folder directly into the browser of FCP.
BTW - Aperture has a direct link to FCP.

You can drag them from iphotos window into the final cut window or timeline too
