Importing off DVD?

I have someone coming over who wants me to convert segments of his films into quicktime movies. The films are on a (authored i assume) DVD. I was going to import them into FCP and export QT. I only have the superdrive hooked up to my mac. Do I need software like popcorn in order to do this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is a shot in the dark, but if FCP supports mpeg editing (don't know, don't have it) you can simply copy VOB files from the DVD and change the VOB extension to mpg, then drop in timeline and export as QT. If his DVD's were manufactured with encryption, you'll have to rip them first.

Thanks for the reply, I tried it out using one of my DVDs it seemed like it was going to work, untill I tried importing into FCP which didn't recognise the file. Despite changing the extension :(

hi I used something called mpeg_streamclip (cant rememeber where i found , do a search, maybe apple discussions) it is free and isnt a trial version that runs out unlike others I tried, though might have to look at handbrake now .

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. After a few days of downloading various Rippers/Extractors I found that dvdxdv works best for me. It cost me 25 bucks but it works like a dream. I also found Mactheripper to be good as well.
-cheers
