importing multitrack audio into protools

hi post prod guys,

i just finished a show using Nuendo and a Mackie Onyx. I created a stereo master mix, which has been cool apparently, but post needs to import multitrack audio for a couple spots where there need to change things.

I exported the audio into a single polyphonic broadcast wave file from Nuendo at 24 bit, 48 - essentially just 7 wav files in one big file. But they just called to say they are having trouble importing this file into protools. Any ideas?

I can always export them split files, but I dont really wanna do that if they are just missing a setting...

cheers,
tim

Depending on the version of Pro Tools they may have problems with poly WAV files. I'm sort of curious if you finished the post, who are you sending this to?

If they are on Le they may not easily be able to poly files over two tracks. Though I thought they could pull out the individual tracks? Don't work with Le that much.
But I do know that there has been a bunch of problems with Poly files and different apps. A lot of production recorders can record poly files and there has been problems.

OMF or AAF would be the standard way to move your session to another system. Any kind of bounce really hamstrings the folks down the line.

But you have a strange work flow here. Normally pict to audio post (pos some conforms) then bounce out the printmaster that either goes to the duplicator or on smaller projects goes back to pix to be dropped in and merger with the picture. So my question would be who's using ProTools that your sending the tracks to?

i recorded the tracks on location. picture has been cut using the stereo master mic. then now to audio post, where pro tools cant open the poly file - the post sound guy wants to get some iso tracks. after audio post, mix goes back to merge with picture and then to tx.

so nuendo is cool with poly but not pro tools? interesting... ok, ill try an omf. thats easy too, anyway.

oh, and how rude of me - thanks for answer. the audio post is being done here in johannesburg south africa.

PT HD can open poly's I'm not sure if Le can because it only supports stereo tracks. THe Poly issue I think is/was more general. It was sort of new and recorders implemented before post did. AVid had/has problems with Poly, FCP had problems with WAV's in general so that included poly's. Then there were some issues because the metadata for poly's is not part of the original spec or at least not an area where apps used to look so even if open-able they would come in incorrectly labeled etc.

In the scenario you describe I would think OMF would work better and faster than bouncing out file. But silly me I work in PT you might actually have recorded a polly file in the first place. One of my pet PT peeves.
Anyway if they are on Le they might have to use the workplace browser to pull in the individual tracks since Le doesn't support more than stereo. If they are on HD and can't read the pol's they are either on an old version of PT or there is something funky with the file or operator error. If you want to send me a small sample file I can take a look at it.

I'm not sure since I'm not at my LE rig, but I believe LE can import polyphonic files. It has to open them on separate mono tracks, but it is possible. I think it might be something that only DV Toolkit 2 owners can take advantage of. Sorry to be so non-commital.

Here is another non-commital answer. They might have added this feature in 7.2, along with the field recorder stuff, so if the studio is on an older version, that might be the problem.

Personally, I would be happy with individual files.

thanks guys... looks like im going to have convert these files to either omf or split mono files. bummer. they must be running an older le version... thanks for the feedback... suprised to find that PT doesnt support this!

I have not upgraded to Nuendo 4 but 3 had massive issues with exporting OMF to PT. I have been meaning to investigate if 4 has improved the situation. Anyone know?

The OMF export is, to me, the number one issue keeping Nuendo from being a practical threat to PT. If I know I am handing off my work I have no choice but to use PT.

Cheers

hmmm. not sure, far as i know it exports an OMF just fine. Is there a problem with PT reading Nuendo OMF files?

I've decided to go with split mono. It will be easiest to convert all my poly wavs to split mono waves in order to get this stuff to work. Also easier to export all split mono for the last two episodes of this show (which im shooting now, In lusaka zambia. where its HOT.)
