Importing miniDV onto the Computer

What are some of the varying ways to import miniDV footage from the tape to the computer? Purchasing a $1500 miniDV deck is one option... any other, slightly more affordable, options, perchance?
 
purchasing a "capture cam" which would be a cheap consumer cam to use as a deck would be a much more affordable option.
 
and I would just hook the camera up to the computer via firewire? How much quality will I lose in the process?
 
Yep, exactly. You would use it basically the same as you would a mini-dv deck.
You won't lose any quality, there won't be any difference in quality from uploading with a consumer cam, a DVX or a deck.
