Importing from a DVD

Does anyone know how to capture footage that is on a DVD? The raw footage I have that I need to edit is on a DVD. Whenever I import it, all I get is the video and not the sound. Does anyone know how I can import both the audio and video of the dvd source?

MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize 2 seem to be the norm.

Ya know... someone should create a rundown of exactly how to do this, and we should ask a MOD to make it a sticky. This question gets asked SO many times, and I think it'd be helpfull.

Anyone?

Maybe I'll write it up...

one could also use a capture card and basically "digitize" it using log and capture. That works if you yourself burned it but not usually if a DVD has copyright protection. I don't know if by using mac the ripper or some form it goes faster than real time capturing? That would be a definate benifit though.

Is it realtime with something like mac the ripper or DVDxDV

yeah, use Mac The Ripper and MPEG Streamclip. That works the best, and no, it's not realtime. I've used it with a short 5 minute DVD and both aps worked very quickly.

it would be quicker to use MTR and MPEG Steamclip. You'll open MTR and insert your dvd, it will then find the dvd and you'll need to make a folder where the dvd files will go. Then rip away. After that, open MPEG Streamclip, then open up your DVD folder and you'll have to find the right file by dragging it to MPEG Streamclip. Once you have the right one, change the settings on MPEG Streamclip to DVCPRO 50.
