Importing footage to computer.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this site and the DVX100b in general. Although I have no complaints about the camera itself, I've been having a tough time finding the right cable to import my footage to my computer. After a lot of searching, I've been told that what I need is a 6 pin to USB connection. Does anyone know if this is right or if there is another method to import? Thanks.

The DVX does not have USB support at all.

You'll need a Firewire connection on your PC (AKA IEEE1394a or b)
The 4-pin connector is what your DVX takes, most PC's have a 6-pin firewire connector (although some have 4-pin ones as well)

If you don't have a firewire port on your PC, you will need to invest in a PCI firewire card to add in in order to give it functionality for the DVX :)

Don't use your DVX to capture/transfer data from the camera to the computer. I highly recommend buying a cheap, consumer camera, and capturing your footage with that. This will save wear and tear on your DVX's heads.

How exactly does that work? Because I've heard that same suggestion before but I never really looked into it.

When you use a camera to capture, you are simply in play back mode. Then computer reads the footage, and brings it into your harddrive, or where ever you are capturing it. Doing this, wears the heads down on your camera. When ever your camera is on, or recording, it uses the "heads". Once the heads get used for a long time (100 hours say) they get dirty and you get a warning on your LCD saying DIRTY HEADS. You then put a cleaning tape in and clean the camera.

So capturing 45-60 minute footage with your DVX is kind of a waste, because your just using your cameras heads, which means they get dirty quicker, thus you have to clean them!

Okay, so basically I would just pop the tape into a cheap mini DV and then import through that?

Yes.
just get yourself the cheap cam, 1394 card and 4-6 pin 1394 cable and you be set.
