Importing AVI files into PPro 1.5

I am setting up a new work station at work and I can't import AVI files into my test project. I get an "unsupported or invalid file format" messege. I can use the same project file on my own work station and import AVI's fine. It's driving me crazy because I set my own station up months ago and I must have done something at the time to make it work. Now though, I can't figure out what to do. :(

Any help would be appreciated.

-> Make sure the medium you're transferring them on (DVD, hard drive, etc) is not corrupted (bring it back home on the same medium and try it there)
-> If they're DV AVIs (i.e. you captured them from miniDV using Premiere), I'd try reinstalling Premiere to fix the DV-AVI codec
-> If they're a different type of avi (there are hundreds), it's possible that you don't have the proper codecs installed on your work machine. Codecs are kind of like drivers for video - they're independent of programs like Premiere and give your system as a whole the ability to decode certain types of compression. For example you might need to install DivX. You could try using theG-Spot Codec Information Appliance (don't worry, it's not porn!), it's a great little app that tells you all kinds of things about the audio and video codecs that a file uses and whether or not you have them installed on your machine.

What kind of .avi files are you trying to import? DV AVI?

If you're trying to import for instance a divx avi or xvid avi file you have to have the appropriate codecs installed on the machine in order for them to be imported, the same goes for other non-standard type of avi files.

Edit: Looks like you got me first whilst I was writing the answer overnighttolondon :)

thanks for the tips guys, ill try some of those ideas. jazzx, the avi clips are from a canon digital elph if that helps.

Interesting discussion. I just tried importing AVI files from my Canon Powershot a610 and encountered the same problems.

tripleAAA, please post the solution, if you find it!

Thanks! I just downloaded and will give it a try.

The Canon a610 is capable of surprisingly good 30fps (and 60fps) video. I just got the camera, and am looking forward to experimenting with it. It could actually be useful on a car mount, or in other areas where the DVX should be used with caution. I'll post video if I can successfully import and edit.
