If I use an external anamorphic lens to get a 16:9 aspect ratio on the dvx100(a), do I import it the same way I would import the footage under squeeze mode? (in other words, keep all settings the same except check off the anamorphic option in the capture options and sequence options) I am using Final cut pro 4.5. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: importing anamorphic footage

Oh, and before I forget, are there any "downsides" or compromises that come with using the external anamorphic lens attachment? Zoom limitations? Focus limitations? DOF limitations? Soften image? Bring in more/less light? Thanks

Re: importing anamorphic footage

1. Yep, thats all you need to do. In general, you are not even required to do this. The only thing that the "16:9" option does (this is true for all SD-editing suites), is, it unsqueezes the frame horizontically for better viewing and gives your effects and titler an idea about how a true square is proportioned. Thats all. It does not change your footage itself. Thats the reason why you can also safely edit a true 16:9 project (true: horziontically squeezed, not letterboxed) as 4:3 footage, just make sure your titles etc have the right aspect ratio, then encode an MPEG-2 stream. 4:3 or 16:9 doesnt matter, even in the encoding process. That just changes a small flag within the stream and you can CHANGE/OVERRIDE that flag within every decent DVD authoring program.

BTW: If you have footage that is letterboxed: Technically this is not 16:9, its 4:3 with stupid black stripes on it. Never tell any DVD authoring program that would be 16:9. The only thing to handle letterboxed footage and make it "real" 16:9 is cropping off the letterbox stripes, use something like PhotoZoom to uprezz it to full 480(NTSC)/576(PAL) lines [beware of interlaced footage], and squeeze it horizontically to 720 pixels. Uhmm. Okay. I shut up now. But its true. :-X
