Importing 24p confusion

I'm a little confused about the workflow of AE...
I've shot 24p footage, but when imported into AE 6.5, AE recognizes them as 29.97 with Lower fields.
I know from reading here in the forum that I can have AE Guess the pulldown, but doing that won't change the properties of the clip back to Progressive, only change the frame rate back to 23.976... why is that?

Thanks in advance!

Tom

Technically, any 24p clip using DV compression is really a 29.97 NTSC clip. No DV codec that I know of can do anything except PAL and NTSC standard framerates/sizes.

When you're shooting, the DVX takes the 24 progressive frames and distributes them over the fields of 60i (29.97, lower-field-first) video. You then capture that footage with Premiere (for example), and Premiere does exactly what you're having AE do - it guesses the 24pa pulldown and displays a progressive 24fps clip to you, even though the original file still has all of the 29.97 data in it. This is true even when you're exporting from Premiere into DV avi - your 24pa project is exported as a 29.97 video file with 24pa pulldown.

If you're importing 24pa footage into AE, and you have it guess the pulldown, you should see full progressive frames, with no interlacing, on your 24fps timeline.

Hi overnighttolondon, Thanks for replying.
If you don't mind I have a few more question...

1) Why is it importent to interpert footage as opposed to just importing the clips and setting the composition to 23.976?
2) When rendering from AE into the "MPEG-DVD" preset, what should the settings be then? 23.976 fps? 29.97 fps? And should I change "field rendering" from off to on in the render settings?

Thanks again!

1: It is important that you use the Interpret Footage so AE knows the correct format of your video and is able to turn it into 24p, or, as overnight wrote, so AE is able to take 60i and get the 24p info from it.

2: Mpeg video for a DVD player is 720x480 29.97 fps. Your TV displays fields, but when you are working with a 24p video, you can still work inside a 29.97 comp. Personally, I never render fields from AE. When you render without fields in AE, it will turn a 60i iinto a 30p.

I render (when I have the space for it) an uncompressed .avi without fields. Then, I open that in something like Vegas, Premiere, or Encore, put it in place, and let the Editing software encode it for DVD. That may be a timely work around for some, but I prefer to come out of AE with no codecs, because from everything I have seen, Vegas and Encore render MPEG2 with less hassle. Plus, I can always go back to the AE render and open it, make changes, and re-render without any decoding/encoding processes which may lead to artifacts.
