Import Transparent File Illustrator to FCP/LiveType

I am working on a project where I am trying to import a logo into my timeline. I am having a hard time getting the logo (which has transparent background in Illustrator) to come up without a white background. I want the alpha channel to be there, so that I don't have a white background, I just want the graphic and that is it. Does anyone know if there is something that I need to do coming out of Illustrator or into Final Cut/Live Type that would allow for this? I am trying to get this done for a client so any help would be great... Thanks!

What are you bringing it in as, filetype I mean? I think .png is the way you want to go for FCP. Its been a long while though since I've done that so can't remember for sure and not sure if its changed in the more recent versions of FCP.

And old cheat, if I recall things correctly, is to create a background layer in your file. You can color the background anything at all you like. Take the layered file into FCP (I recall this from PSDs though not Illustrator stuff) and when you lay that down the different layers should show up on different tracks. So simply hide (opacity)/remove the background layer. No guarantees on how accurate this is though as its been a long while since I did this and may be confusing some aspect of things. I would certainly consider this the 'wrong' way to go about things, but might work for an 'in a pinch' cheat.

Maybe Ben will catch this post. This seems like a good Ben question.

cheers.

Thanks for your help. I am currently trying to bring it in as a GIF into Motion and then make an animation. We'll see if that works.

Two things, make the background black, FCP is really good at keying out black.
Use a Keying filter, use the eye dropper to pick the white background.

If you have black and/or white in your logo, well, you need to create it in a fomat that supports alpha channels (I've not fooled with that in so long, I'd have to look it up).

I use a non-animated logo. It has blacks and whites in it. I went into PhotoShop and placed it on a green background, as there's no green in the logo, then keyed it out with a filter.

If you're going to do this a lot, I guess go back to Motion and do that alpha channel stuff that I've forgotten about these days. I know the Animation codec supports alpha channels, but it's a very CPU intensive codec and will require rendering.

Hmmmm.... Not really my strong point here...

Can you post a still from the animation, or link to the animation itself somewhere?
