Import settings? Capture problem...

I am not an editor. I am a shooter. I shot some footage on a HVX 200 in 480i (SD) 24pN and now I have to edit it. I tried capturing it on DV NTSC 24 and the footage looks pretty messed up. Its pixelated, the colors are bleeding and there is mucho strobing (i think thats the term, there are nasty lines in subject when she is moving, etc). What am I doing wrong? What should I do? Is the footage just f***ed?? Thank guys

24pN???

Am I to assume you mean 24pA??? Ugh, I need to look at the HVX specs again. Did this go to tape? If so, then no matter what you do it is 29.97 with cadence added.

I'd capture in 29.97 standard DV NTSC and then figure out what you have.

I also must assume the 'strobing' is the combined frames of the cadence. These can be removed once you figure out what you have but you must NEVER capture in 24fps... except for those SPECIAL occasions where you actually do have recorded media that IS 24fps. I believe the HVX will do that but only on its HD side.

When you capture the clips with 29.97 step thru them frame by frame. Pick and action shot... if you see PPPCC (Progressive/Combined (interlaced)) then you have a 3.2 cadence added and you must take the clips to Cinema Tools to reverse telecine them to 23.98. If you see PPPPC then you have 2.3.3.2 cadence and you can select the clip in the browser window of FCP and go... TOOLS - REMOVE ADVANCED PULLDOWN. This will then get you to 23.98.

Either way you'll then have 24(ish) progressive frames per second and no 'strobing' or combined frames. THEN you can edit in a 23.98 sequence.

BUT -- stay away from ProRes if you are in SD land.

Hope this helps.

Sorry I don't understand 24pN.

24pN is only available with 720...and 24pN (native) means that FCP will record ONLY 24 frames of video, unlike 24PA where the 24 frames are in a 29.97 frame video stream, and are extracted.

480 only shoots 24PA, and the pulldown will have to be removed.

I don't have Cinema Tools? I think its PPPCC but I tried Remove ADvanced Pulldown anyway and nothing happened; the footage still looks awful. Strobing, bleeding, pixelated...

I captured a new clip on just standard DV NTSC, not 24, and tried the advanced pulldown removal and still nothing... In the browser window the clip did change from 29.97 to 23.98 but still looks bad...

And even if i remove the strobe what about the Color bleeding?

Why don't you have cinema tools? Should be... oh wait... did you get FCP from a 'friend?'

Shame.

You're on your own. There's a reason some of us pay for our software.

Not being snide...

You should PAY for what you use. I'm sure your 'school' would have given you the entire program disks if they really wanted you to have them.

As for FREE advice!!!... now you'll have to find that from someone else. But we did give you the answer.
