import problems

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but here goes: my buddy has had a lot of difficulty importing dv footage. Here is the setup - the footage I shot with a panasonic dvx100b, he has imported it into FCP on his mac using a sony hdv camcorder for playback (I think it's an HC9). He actually imported about 6 tapes worth of footage seemingly without any trouble, then he encountered some type of problem with the next tape i gave him. He has apparently gone to a Mac specialist, who has told him that all of the footage shot with the dvx100 and imported thru the sony (using firewire) was a fifth of the quality and (my friend isn't very technical and I'm getting this secondhand from him) it is in PAL format. He has recomended that we use only the camcorders that the footage was recorded with for playback and import.
So I guess my question is just concerning compatability issues between panasonic and sony dv (and or standard dv being played back with hdv equipment), and/or correct FCP settings for importing such dv footage.

If that makes any sense, any advise/info would be appreciated. Thanks.

The DVX100 records in minidv format, which is dv quality (13gb per hour, 25mbit, 4:1:1). A prosumer minidv sony camcorder more than likely records in the same format - dv. I am not sure if the HDV aspect of this equation is causing problems.

I have a Sony DSR-11 that plays both PAL and NTSC, miniDV and DVCAM and have used Panasonic, Cannon and Sony tapes in it without problems. Cameras on the other hand definitely do not play as fair with other formats. It would be a better idea to use a dedicated capture device that can play well with the formats you want to ingest.

Usually, if something works for a while and then stops, there is a reason for problem.

Did your friend check his capture preset? Sounds like it may have been set to PAL or some other odd capture setting.

Have you or he changed tapes recently? Could be dirty heads causing some form of lower quality (pixellation, dropped frames...etc).

More information on the exact camera used, FCP version, Operating system, computer...etc would be helpful in troubleshooting.
