Import long .AVI file

Anybody know how i can get round this? or even do it?!

I have a long AVI file (around 699mb) but need to import into Vegas 7 to chop a scene that i want to work on (around 40secs only!)

But in order to get this scene i need to load into vegas to chop and delete the rest of the movie - but i can't seem to import?

I can't drag onto the timeline as nothing really happens, nor import, not open in trimmer?

Any ideas?! help!

You sure you just didn't give up too soon?

I've had files that take forever to load because of size. Usually .mpg, but avi might act the same.

But, worse comes to worst, try opening it in VirtualDub and chop it there.

Well when i try there is no "egg timer" on the cursor to show that its doing something and also i noticed just now that it says

"stream attributes could not be determined" for both audio & Video, although this file plays fine in other players.

OK. Gotta ask. Where'd this AVI come from? It could be a matter of it being AVI Type 1 rather than Type 2, or a codec like Xvid or Divx or something.

(Don't pay too much attention to hourglasses, though. They only show up after a program actually start processing something, usually.)

a mate of mine did an avi of part of a film copy, but dont know what he used - i only need around 40 sec scene to use for a showreel project - so thinking that it was a straight forward AVI i thought it would import into Vegas no problem?!

He has given me around the first 50 mins of the film hence 699mb but as mentioned i need a 40 sec scene around 20 mins in...

I'm baffled...

If you have 50 mins of video and the file is only 699mb, then you definitely have some kind of compression on it. I work with 4 GB size files all the time and have no trouble (But they are Way less then 50 mins).

One thing is suspect to me - the fact that the properties are not showing the stream attributes suggests that you might be missing something specific to the compression format. Maybe you should ask your friend about the format, and/or ask for just the 40 seconds you want in an uncompressed AVi format?

An AVI isn't a video "type" by itself -- it's just a wrapper. It can hold any codec, and you need to have the codec installed in order to use it. This sure sounds like a DivX or something similar.

Find out what the codec is and download it.

David > how does one install codecs for vegas ? or is it generally installed for the whole OS ? Do they need to be put in some folders or just sintalled on the system in general. Because recently i had a problem. Some small wmv clips of about 3 secs which were downloaded from the net. They would open and run perfectly within media player (which i guess had the codecs). But Vegas cudnt even play the files back. They would stutter and stop while audio would continue. I tried rendering and i got a wysiswyg result with the same frozen frames but audio continuing. How does one overcome these situations ?

Any codec you install on your system should be usable in Vegas (even if it's sometimes a little tricky to find them for rendering). I don't really know which ones were involved in your case . . . ?

Isn't there a check box somewhere in the Options to "Ignore third party codecs"?

Unchecked should add them the list of available codecs.

Unless I imagined it.
