Import and alter screen captures

Hello everyone. I wanted to add a video effect to a screen capture, but needed to export the pic then print and scan at a higher DPI and re-import to premiere pro 2 to add video effect and export again to use in photoshop CS2. I imported the pic back to premier at a higher DPI (the recommend range, something like 1096, I'm at work without access to my notes). When I re-import the pic in Premiere Pro 2 the pic shows up too big and/or as a black frame. I've tried 24 bit, 32 bit, different DPI. The only thing that works is a smaller DPI that isn't suitable for blowing up for poster use. I may be doing this the hard way, but not sure. I want to use the extract video effect, but not found in CS2. Premiere Pro 2 is exporting the screen grab at 96dpi, which is too low for a pic I want to put on a poster. Anyone have any ideas, advice? Am I going about this the wrong/hard way? Thank you in advance!

If you have an SD dimensioned PPro project (720 x 480 for NTSC or 720 x 576 for PAL) you will need to have your CS assets set to match. Don't forget about the PAR as well (CS can handle non square pixels easily). If you want higher resolution, you need to set up a much larger project to begin with.

Hi Kugar,

If I understand correctly, you want to print a frame from your timeline to make some changes on paper and then scan it and import it back to Premiere.

If that's the case, here are my recommendations which will save as much quality as possible.

- export frame from PP, preferably as bitmap (bmp).
- open it in Photoshop and resample image at 600 pixels/inch (under Image Size option).
- set optimal Print Size which will use most area available on paper
- print it
- make changes on paper
- scan it (again, preferably to bitmap because it preserves max. quality possible)
- import the scan to Photoshop, resize it to original project resolution (as khmuse mentioned) and save as new file
- import it to your PP project.

If you don't want to make manual changes on paper (though people sometimes do esp. making animations), skip the whole paper thing and make changes in CS2. Working with original project resolution will be fine as long as you keep anti-aliasing enabled when drawing or typing something on image.
