iMovie now with AVCHD!!

iMovie, in iLife '08, which was released today, now can edit AVCHD. This is great news as the only other NLE that supported it until today was Vegas.

I can only assume that this means FCP will support AVCHD in the very near future!

iMovie doesn't edit AVCHD natively. It gets transcoded to another format (most likely AIC). FCP 6.0.1 already supports AVCHD.

AVCHD is only supported on Intel processors. It is not supported on PowerPC Macs.

iMovie, FCP 6.01, EDIUS, Pinnacle Studio 11, Ulead 11, and Vegas all support AVC-HD in one fashion or another. Pinnacle and Ulead support it natively, IINM; Vegas supports it natively but only from Sony camcorders (sigh). EDIUS, FCP, and iMovie all support it via transcoding to an editing codec.

Ah thanks, I did not realize there even was an FCP 6.0.1 update since I don't own the new FCS yet. Yes, I would assume that iMovie transcodes AVCHD seamlessly to the Apple Intermediate Codec, which is supported among the old processors as well and is a bit faster (and bulkier) than the ProRes 422 codec.

From what I understand, people transferring their footage to ProRes are having a hard time doing multi-track editing even on a MacPro with more than 2 tracks at a time. I don't see this being the ultimate codec yet until hard disk bandwith and processors get faster.
