IMDB Page

Hi guys,

Just wondering, do you guys have to pay to make a IMDB page of your own as a cinematographer?

I registered one already, but couldn't figure out how to make my resume.

It's kind of confusing, imdb is essentially a moderated wiki that anyone can edit, so you can't technically "create" a resume page. You can only edit existing pages that were created by the IMDB staff/moderators. Also, the public imdb page is separate from your account and not linked. You, including anyone else in the world, can edit an IMDB page and your edits will be submitted to the staff for validity. For instance, this my IMDB public page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4548941/

It's like any other imdb page, but it is not linked with my personal account. In order to get a page like this, a film you worked on has to have been submitted to an IMDB qualifying festival and accepted for consideration. It doesn't have to be accepted into the fest or screened, but as long as they receive your film (or the film you worked on), it will get an IMDB title page. On that title page, all of the cast and crew get listed. At this point, if you didn't have a title page before (like mine above) it will be created. If you already had one, the film will simply be added to the list of credits on that title page. For the best way to submit to fests and get IMDB credit, I'd highly recommend using Without A Box, it's also just about the best way to submit to fests in general. https://www.withoutabox.com/

I know this may seem confusing, let me know if you have other questions.

--Edit--

I should also note that this process is completely free, the only thing you have to pay for is the entry fee to the festival. However, if you wish to add pictures to your IMDB title page, that will cost money.

Hi Tommy,

Thank you for the explanation. And yes, I am looking to create a page like yours. So what it means is, instead of you writing credit on y our resume, people edit your page and give you the credit on the page I guess?

The editor of a film I worked on asked me do I have an IMDB page. I just registered one and I am not sure what I need to send him in order for him to find me on IMDB.

What do I need to do for people to find me and give me the credit?

Although I haven't experienced it, isn't it possible that if your film doesn't receive any screenings that it would be removed from IMDb during the period of confirmation (and it not meeting the criteria)? I do know that after a few months of being listed (after a festival submission) IMDb checks up your listing and requests screening information updates (to confirm that the film still meets the criteria, I assume). Anyone ever experienced a removal of their film listing at this point?

You need to request that a film you made be listed on IMDb, or that a film you were involved in has included you under their crew. You can do this (as mentioned) by submitting it to a festival through withoutabox or by manually requesting a title be created (you need to include evidence to prove that your film meets their criteria). http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?titletopfaq

That's exactly it. Think of "your page" like a Wikipedia article, we'll call this imaginary page KEN'S PAGE. Even if you have an account on Wikipedia, the account is not linked specifically to KEN'S PAGE. Anybody can edit KEN'S PAGE. It gets confusing when you're making pages for yourself because you feel like it should be part of your account, but it's not, it's just another page that anyone can edit. The difference between Wikipedia and IMDB, is that IMDB has to approve any changes made to a page.

What you registered on IMDB is not your "page", it's just your account. This account allows you to edit other pages, submit movie reviews, etc. However, it is completely separate from the resume page that everybody sees when they type "Kenneth Lau" into the search box. So, the short answer to your question is, no you do not currently have an IMDB "page" unless you've been a part of another credited IMDB film. To get this public Wikipedia-ish page, you must be credited on a film. In your case, the editor will submit the film to an IMDB qualifying festival, let's say the film's name is MOOGLE. Once the festival has received it's copy of MOOGLE and is in the process of considering it, the IMDB staff will create a page for that film. Now, it is possible for anyone with an IMDB account to edit this page, that includes changing or adding synopses, technical info, cast and crew, etc. If you're not listed as the cinematographer or DP for the film, you can add a credit for Kenneth Lau. If Kenneth Lau does not already have IMDB credits, they will create a page for Kenneth Lau, and the credit for that film will now be on that page, and any future films you work on.

kylevant, as far as I'm aware, a film won't be removed if it has not been screened. It's always possible that IMDB will remove a film's page, but I've got films on IMDB that have never been screened, and have been on IMDB for over a year. I think all they care about is if the festival you submitted to is "IMDB Qualifying". You are right, if you did not submit to an IMDB qualifying festival, then you need to provide proof to IMDB that your film was screened at fests, and they will create the page for you.

Tommy hit everything on the nose.

I might add that while it is ideal to have the film you submit to IMDb also submitted to a festival, it is possible for it to get accepted as long as you provide proof that the film actually existed. I think that IMDb is becoming less strict as time passes; I suppose because of the easiness of making a film in today's world of HD and online collaborating communities, eg DVXuser. :)

Possibly just the opposite, they're becoming more strict because of how easy it is becoming. Every YouTube user considers themselves a filmmaker now. If you don't go the Withoutabox route than the amount of evidence you need to provide needs to be quite lengthly.

If I'm not mistaken you don't get a resume or several other features unless you pay for a "Pro" account. Yur page exists, but what you can do with it is limited.

Spot-on. I've never paid for a Pro account, so I can't speak to the accessibility or the amount of control you get for the resume pages that you get fro being a Pro user.

yeah, but a pro account is absurdly cheap... if you're actually working in the industry. if you're not, then you don't need a pro account anyway.

This is so confusing ! OMG

I have been trying to add my name to a feature. However, the same name of another person is added.

I am totally new to IMDB and have never had any title in other films on IMDB. This is my first one and I think I have to choose from ' This is the first credit in this section for ' Lau, Kenneth ' OR This is a different person not currently listed - create ' Lau Kenneth ( II ) '

Do you guys know which one I have to choose ???

If you haven't ever been in or made any films previously listed on IMDb then you need to add yourself as "Lau Kenneth ( II )". If someone else with the same name has been incorrectly credited as you than you need to request that it be fixed to represent you (as in "Lau Kenneth ( II )").

There's another Nathan Fisher who made some Iraq vet documentary a couple years ago, BUT because I got a "Special Thanks" credit in a Troma film about 5 years ago (Poultrygeist) I actually beat him to IMDB, so he's the one who got stuck with the (II) designation.

Haha! The (II) designation really does stink, but there's nothing one can do about it.

Thank you so much for all the advices. I have finally have my name on my first gig as Kenneth Lau II.
Couldn't have done it without you guys : )
