image stabilizer

Just wondering if I am doing this right... I'm selecting a clip, then dropping the Image Stabilizer onto it. I'm not sure what to do with:

View: SOURCE
Center
Scan Range

I then render... when I play back, this black frame surrounds it and jumps around (I know why the black frame is there... I just don't know what to do from here to stabilize it).

Is my footage just too bad for the stabilizer to work with? Is that why I'm having this problem... if it were more stable to begin with, would it work?

You should be able to change SOURCE to FINAL... maybe? Then find what looks like the most black area and scale and shift to that.

Nothing here is easy... I've found also that to stabilize well you also need to keyframe some simple pans... if you see the image generally moving to the right you need to pan with it slowly.

Shake does a great job with this in it's SmoothCam node... but doing it by hand you need to use keyframes.
