Image Stabilization

Greetings everyone. A friend recommended this site to me a week ago, and I've been reading ever since. Its very informative and useful. I'm new to cinematography and I've recently purchased the DVX 100A.

Forgive me if this topic has already been addressed. I feel as though there is excessive camera shake whenever I'm doing a handheld shot and moving. I turn on the image stabilization or OIS I believe it's called. But it doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference. I purchased a cheap shoulder mount and it helps a bit. But I feel as though there is some knowlegde that I'm missing.

Anyone have any tricks or advice on holding the camera steady while shooting?

read this link, and its followup posts in regard to the stable shooting and ois, but in short . your not going to get smooth gliding shots out of your hand with or without ois on unless you are some sort of yoga guru, thats why the steadicam , and similar devices were invented. ois is only supposed to hold still framed shots from shaking as much, and it does. but its not designed, or good for using as a subsitute for a steadycam device. mostly its all practise practise practise. even with a steadycam, you need to practise alot to get good at it.

Also, what shutter speeds have you been using?

Nope I am using the NTSC DVX.

I have been using slow shutter speeds due to low light shooting. But now that you mention it, I suppose a faster shutter speed might lend to greater image stabilization?

Cool thing about the DVX is that is geared towrds filmmakers. Try using a tripod or stabilizer! :)

I looked for a demo but no go. Guess you have to buy to try? I have tried maybe 3-4 other software stabilizers/plugins and all can work. So far the best I used is in Commotion Pro 4.0.

What I don't like in any of them is having to crop down the outside edges and blowup back to 720x480, but I guess the other way is don't shake when you shoot ;D.
