Image Sequence (Timelapse) + Cropping + Animation in AE?

I shot a timelapse on my DSLR. It is 240 frames at a resolution of roughly 3400x2300 pixels.

Here's what I want to do: Scale, crop, and animate the footage into a 1080p video with a "tilt" motion.

The steps it seems I should be taking.

1. Open the 240 JPEG frames as "footage" in AE. I seem to have figured this part out by going to Import>Multiple Files>JPEG Footage.

2. I want to scale the footage to 1080p resolution (at 2.35:1). To accomplish this, it seems that I should create a new "composition" at the desired resolution (1920x850). But then what? Do I drag the footage onto the comp and then Transform>Scale its width to 1920?

3. Next I want to animate the footage, so that it appears to be "tilting" up. I have lots of room to work with vertically, since the original images are nearly square. How do I animate this sequence? What exact steps do I use to have the footage move up or down the comp like a smooth "tilt" move?

If you don't mind, explain it to me like I'm a child, because I'm very new to AE. Don't assume that I know anything...

EDIT: I actually seem to have figured this out by inserting "position" keyframes into the timelime. Is that how's it's done, or is there a more visual way to do this, maybe if I wanted to add some panning + tilting effect?
