Purchasing an imac- kinda clueless, ive been told its relatively easy to download FCP5 so thats what im planning on doing. Im assuming i'd prolly have to also get an external hard drive also, so does it really matter which imac i buy?

this is probably a stupid question but any help would be much appreciated thanks.

First of all, any Apple computer you buy is going to be awesome.

Second, downloading software is illegal. Tsk tsk tsk.

Third, even the "lowest" model iMac is going to run Final Cut Pro beautifully. It would be wise to invest in an extra gig of RAM to help it run a bit smoother. I used to run FCPHD on a 1st gen Mac Mini and had no problems at all. Don't listen to the guys who say you can only run it smooth on a fully loaded Mac Pro. They are idiots.

Do you plan on using Motion? The iMacs are so small, you might want to look into a Macbook Pro. I use one and am absolutely obsessed with it.

why do u suggest the mac book?

A Macbook Pro, actually.

The versatillity of the Macbook Pro is unmatched. I can edit in the suite here at work, take it in my living room and use my HDTV as a monitor, bring it on location and capture footage straight to my hard drive... the list goes on. Not to mention the processing speed is faster than an iMac.

It all depends on your workflow, but for my needs, I would be insane to be using a desktop.

I also want to add that these are just examples of using Final Cut Pro. Having a portable computer is also more than satisfactory in my basic computing needs.

....try before you buy - but

....try before you buy - but

I understand your reason to the download thing - goodluck.

an alternative is to go and get the Final Cut Express package and start there where you are on the right side of the fence. I really don't think a lecture on piracy is in order because if you need to learn the program..........

The iMAc as a machine is great for editing and the new machines are flying fast! the 24 inch will let you display a pixel for pixel HD video (23inches) so you can really get to grips with your work on that machine. Add an external monitor in the future and you will be smoking on productivity.

Sorry
- a Macbook is not gonna cut it in HD
- a MAcbookPro is portable - sure but it is like a stove (HOT!)

When you spend $2000 on an iMac you obviously sound serious - so I expect you will be a Legal FCP user soon. Welcome to a great platform (with some exceptions)
