Imac vs powermac

If we're talking HD footage (HVX200) instead of DV, is everyone's advice the same regarding the imac, or do we now cross the line into powermac territory?

HD footage will certainly take more horsepower to move and process the data.
You might be able to skate by with an iMac but if HD is your target your shoudl really consider the tower. One of the critical factors will be to have a drive that's fast and large. With the tower you can install drives into the box but with the iMac you have to use an external firewire drive.

Bottem line, powermac is better.. dual cpu's..and the ability to add stuff to the motherboard.. where Imac is a soddered motherboard.. you're stuck with a single g5 cpu and not able to upgrade anything later on. (maybe memory, not sure.)

if space is an issue though, and you know you wont need dual cpu's for compositing.. or large projects that would require more speed.. heck.. get the imac.

I edit all of my work on my G4 eMac with Final Cut Express & two external Firewire drives.

Certainly not as powerful as a G5 tower, but for DV origination and output it does the job.

I'd suggest starting with what you've got and perhaps applying for some grants in the mean-time then maybe you'll be able to upgrade later if you need the extra power to finish.

BTW, I often "back-up" work by "printing to video" a few times along the way.

Good luck,
MR

I had a powermac and sold it and purchased 2 g5 imacs... i love it... for virtually the same price i have 2 computers to go back and forth on rather than trying to run 2 programs on the powermac... also, i can now capture, edit, and work on 2 separate final cut projects at the same time which is a MAJOR plus and time saver for me as I am often working on several projects at the same time...

btw... damn apple for just releasing the newest version of the imac 16 days after i purchased my second one... damn them!

Considering I'm using a single processor 867mhz G4...you're more than fine.
I'm nearly finished editing my feature on this old lady and she hasn't died out yet.
