I am not a mac guy but i have used a G4 before to edit using imovie. I want to make a purchase in a few months and use FCP. However since i am a bit ignorant on the differences i am not sure what to buy. I went to the apple store today and looked at the various machines. I thought there was only one G5 but it looks like there is also an iMac G5. what is the difference between the two model types. I really dont know what the main difference is between the Imac and and a standard machine, othert han a significant price diff. Any help would be appreciated. oif course i could avoid the whole thing and buy a PC but for editing i have problems with that

If you can afford the desktop version get that. The iMacs are ok for prosumer use but aren't as flexible, expandible or powerful as the full on Powermac G5.

Main difference being 2 processors vs 1. Also, the ability to add additional internal drives, cards, etc. The imac g5 isn't a bad machine though if you can't swing the tower.

If you can, wait til May 1st. Sounds like Apple has alot up its sleeve in April. They are all good, the towers of course are much more expandable, but there are alot of rumors about PowerMacs, iMacs, iBooks, FCP and more being upgraded in April. Either they will be blowing out what they have now for a few hundred less, or offering new machines for similar prices. Nothing sucks more than paying full buck for a computer that gets upgraded in a month. Wait it out if you can...

The iMac G5 is a great little machine, and once Tiger hits, it will really fly!

but, having said that, a Dual G5 tower will blow it away.

The iMac has a slower bus speed, they intentionally slowed it down, as the iMac is a consumer machine.

With the G5, your just buying the Tower, no monitor. But you have options like PCI-X, up to 8GB of ram.. 2 processors... and a much much better video card.

If your budget allows, I would say definite go for a Dual G5 machine. FCP will run great on it. And as I said before, when Tiger arrives, your machine will scream..

I have heard from my developer friends who are using Tiger, they are saying it is a lot quicker. A huge speed improvement.

Then Again, if you can't afford a Tower, then the iMac is a great little machine.

i had this same question a few months back....i went with the dual 2.0 tower over the imac and I havent regretted the extra cost.
