imac and apple cinema display

Hello,

I'm new in FCP and I bought an iMAC to get used to mac and FCP, what you guys think about adding a 23" apple cinema to the imac to check HD footage, color correction, etc ?
Should the FCP performance go down with an extra monitor to view footage ?
Advantages ?

Just adding the 23" display won't get you a color correctable image. You'll need the Matrox MXO as well. It converts the signal and displays it properly on the ACD...as well as gives you controls to balance the color bars properly. The best you can do without the MXO is view your footage full screen.
 
My iMac powers an external 20" monitor with no discernable performance hit. You should be fine, although as Shane points out, it's not strictly speaking a true color correction monitor.
