With all the talk about the delicateness of the firewire connection, I made this:

Crummy photo, but...simple idea.

Just a piece of aluminum stock with some holes drilled in it. Mounts where the mic mount would be if I was silly enough to use a mic on the camera. 4 more holes for cable ties to secure the firewire cable. (Or that + the mic cables or whatever)

So what are the two small black wires that appear to be running down from the hot shoe on top down behind the rubber firewire cover?

That is a good idea. Did you design it because you use DVRack on set?

Um...black elastic string, actually. Attached to the mic covers and the lenscap.

Guaranteed I'd lose them, otherwise. ::)

Yep. 25' foot firewire cable, too.

I think I'll go out tomorrow and get some aluminum angle stock and make the thing more like a shelf. The mic cables might need a bit more room, if I attach them, too.

Maybe figure out a quick-release for the whole thing.

good Idea. I have the same firewire cable. NewEgg?
I usually just run the firewire cord throught the velcro strap, it works just like your little firewire tie, but is already built in. :D

Yep, NewEgg. Got the 25' and the 16', just in case I get tired of tripping over the 25'. ;)

I think there might be toio much play in the velcroed handgrip. With this thing, I could swing the cam around by the cable and not jostle the connector.

Not that I'd do something like that, even for a very cool effect.

ok i'm glad someone is ahead of me on this, i am doing a LOT more stuff lately where i wish i could use the dv rack and having had my firewire port blown already on my dvx i'm paranoid...

i would like to make something a lot like this but with just a velcro strap running vertically so it could be quick disconnected.

i've been looiking for right angle cables that are 4 pin and preferably 15-25 feet.

where did you get that 4 pin right angle? i've only found 6, no 4-4's

Well...made the one with the angle aluminum. And even painted it. :)

If I had enough cables running at once to make a thick bundle, I'd just run 'em through the supplied mic mount, but...
