I'm so sick of rendering

Ok, I just did a 15 second chroma key section for a commercial and anytime I add anything to the timeline that overlaps the chroma key section I have to render. This is starting to be a real pain in the butt! Is there an easier way around this? Any little tweak I do takes 5-10 minutes of rendering time. Is this normal?

ANy info would be great.

Thanks,

Mike

I was cutting a music a video and had several camera angles of performance takes. These were stacked in separate video tracks. IIRC, they were color graded. I wanted to add some B-roll cutins over the top of this and it went into rendering hell.

I opened a new sequence, dragged the performance sequence in there and was able to add the B-roll cuts over the top with minimum rendering.

I'm not sure if this will help in your case, but thought I'd mention it.

what are you adding on top of the key? is it a background?

you can always try putting the background first then the key on top.

or export with something that has apha and import back to fcp, that should help.

This is my scene. Although I'm not sure why you can see a fuzzy green outline on this photo whereas it is missing in fcp. I'm trying to play around with background colors, text, etc. but for every edit I do I'm waiting forever.

you have multiple layers on top of the key.

maybe try to disable the ones you don't need right now. you can enable them at the end.

if your trying to key the woman on the right and have a video layer on top of that or a picture on the left just disable the video layer of the couple or the guy and the woman on the left. that should help decrease the render time.

anything you don't need just disable.

ok, thanks a lot. I'll try it.

BTW, I noticed when I'm done rendering the files I have 3 thin black lines running up and down the sequence window. It appears to be on the chroma footage because it disappears when I disable that take.

Perhaps you could pre-render the chroma footage as a video with an alpha channel.

I'm not sure what kind of keyer FCP has, but Keylight in After Effects is pretty great so you might even get a cleaner key that way, and hopefully less rendering in FCP.

THanks for the info. I'll look into After Effects for that. I've never been too happy with FCP's keyer...then again, it could be user error also..LOL
