I'm moving to Los Angeles!

Hey guys and gals. I'm moving to L.A. next summer to take a month-long writing (refresher) course, and then I'm going to try my hand at getting paid to write for film and tv and whatever else I can do. I plan to focus on the writing and make ends meet with freelance photo/video if necessary.

Until recently, I've always been intimidated by Hollywood, but now I'm excited by it. I don't really have any friends in cali, so I'll be all alone (which will actually be refreshing for the most part).

I have no idea where I'll live.
I want a spacious 1 bedroom so that I don't go stir crazy and wind up DDT'ing my computer out of frustration.
The money part isn't clear yet, but I'm anticipating being able to spend $7-800 a month for rent (preferably much lower).

HELP!
Any L.A. advice you have is deeply appreciated...

I'd advise getting a "food service" or "house keeping" resume together real quick!!!

Sorry, just f*cking with you.

Good luck.

I really doubt that you will find any where in LA that you would want to live for $700 - $800 per month unless you intend to rent just a room. I know people in the Burbank area that get $800 - $1000 a month for a converted garage during pilot season.

You should probably start looking into places likes Craig's List and other on line rental services to be certain that you are happy with what you are finding.

Yeah...i haven't found anything great yet. That's why I'm starting so soon. If I have to settle for a large studio or efficiency, then I'll do it, but I've lived like that before, and it's no good for me. Not only am I a big guy, but I'm clutter crazy. And I refuse to sleep on a futon again. College is OVER. Me big adult man. Me grownup. Me unemployed...

Unless I wind up getting a laptop, I'll be doing all my writing at home which translates into working at home. I'd never leave the house! Ugh...I don't even want to think about it. I need enough space to motivate me to clean and maybe have another human being over, and to get a plant or something.

Im looking to move to LA in march and have been looking at places there for the last 4 months. Ive taken two trips there since to check out places. For a decent One bedroom its like $1300 - $1600 a month. If your just looking to spend $500-700, I say go on craigslist and look for shared apartments or a room in a house for rent.

well you can find $800 a month place to live. Compton and West Ingle Wood are you're best bet!

Good luck bro! LA is tough!

To all you LA folks, is it true that all the work is in Vancouver now?

"Hey guys and gals. I'm moving to Vancouver next summer "....

You have my sincere condolences, eh.

OUCH. I figured as much...
But I have seen some pretty nice places for 900-1100.
But I certainly don't want to break 1000 on rent. That's batty to me.
i DO NOT want to live in the ghetto.
My last apartment was a room in a house in the ghetto.
It was my 'find inspiration in the struggle phase".
I almost lost my mind. The ghetto is depressing.
I was paying $350 in Philadelphia for all utils paid and free DSL.
Mice galore...and they didn't have apple logos.

I'm entering my 'find inspiration with 24 hour doorman and in-unit Washer dryer" phase.

And is LA really that bad? When I moved to North Philadelphia to go to school, everyone told me to practice my 'ducking and running" skills. Everyone told me how horrible it would be and what a hostile place it was. It wasn't that bad at all. I learned to hate it, and I'm in no hurry to go back, but it's not at all as bad as the majority of people let on...

There are places in LA for the kind of money you're talking about.
The trouble is, you need connections to be able to actually get them.
As with all things in LA, it's who you know...

Welcome to LA-LA LAND.

Yeah, I'm not a plug-and-play consumer. I'd actually enjoy living in Chinatown or Koreatown or someplace like that. As long as it's not the freaking GHETTO, I'll make it work.
The last time I got an apartment without really checking it out thoroughly, I wound up with an ironclad one-year lease living literally in between a gay club named "Woody's" and a lesbian bar name "Sister's"...I thought it was hilarious. This is nothing in particular against the fact that they're homosexual clubs, but they're CLUBS period. It was so LOOOUUUUD. But very safe. And colorful. But the apartment was this much bigger than a walk-in closet. In fact, my mom actually did have a closet in our house that was bigger than my apartment....NEVER AGAIN!
