I'm Lost, Someone Guide Me?

Pardon me if this all sounds like a stupid question, or that the answer is obvious. I may be stupid, or may have missed something along the way, but here is my question. Obviously video takes up a ton of space, for instance, I just put together a mini trailer for my own use, and at 2 minutes long, the full quality version is about 1.2 GB. I didn’t compress, I just exported the entire thing as a quicktime file and it’s size was massive.
If I’m going to be making longer items, obviously the file size will be huge. In theory, Id like to make a 60 minute documentary, but my thought would be that it will be a MASSIVE size file, and not able to fit on any normal DVD disc, once it’s finished. If I have to compress, and lose the quality, it certainly wont be as good visually. Basically, my question is this-How do I get a full quality film I’ve cut and edited and pieced together, to a format that can be viewed by the masses? I would think DVD’s wouldn’t have enough capacity-Pardon my ignorance, I’m still trying to navigate through all the technical needs!

virtually all videos that are put on dvd's are compressed using mpeg2...and frankly the compression looks great. Once you get over the 2 hour mark on dvd's the compression starts to become an issue. What software are you using to make your dvd? Pretty much all of them will encode the video file to the proper size.

Im using Final Cut Pro-So if I go ahead and make sure Im outputting to MPEG-2, I have the smallest file size for the best quality? That's essentially the key Ive been looking for....I;ve even used some IMovie, which, well, we wont get into that. It's output options are limited to say the least.....

If you're using FCP, use Compressor to compress your movie to MPEG-2 and an AC3 (Dolby Digital) file for DVD. There are different options depending on the length of the movie you're compressing.
