The weird thing about the net is that nobody really knows anybody. You get brief snippets of someone's personality, and you can even tell sometimes if you would like to get to know them better. But not much more than that. I'm telling you all of this to qualify myself in a way. Nobody here really knows me. If you did, you would know that I don't like people. It doesn't mean that I dislike them, it just means that I find them (myself included) petty, insecure and relatively uninteresting. I know we all have our gifts and all that crap, but most of us don't really do much with our lives. We trudge through, focusing on the trivial and immediate, ignoring the graces of the world around us. I'm not trying to depress you, (in fact I am an annoyingly chipper guy, ask my wife. I drive her nuts), but suffice it to say that I am not easily impressed and I have a very small personal pantheon of people I find extraordinary.
I just added to my list.
My cousin and his wife were expecting. The morning of her due date she began to have contractions. My cousin called the midwife (planning a home birth). Then the contractions started coming too fast, and the baby started to crown. My cousin called 911, and their other child, Raina woke up asking to have her diaper changed.
"Sorry honey, the baby's coming, Mommy can't change you right now"
"oohhh the baby's coming!"
Next thing you know the doorbell rings and, thinking it was the widwife, my cousin answers the door. It was instead a friend that he had forgotten he called to come over and take care of Raina. He goes back upstairs to check on China (his wife). He opens the bathroom door and there she is...
Delivering her own baby
Yep, just standing there, pulling that puppy out...or catching it...or whatever you call it. The EMT's arrived moments later, and the midwife immediately after.
Liam John Patrick Johnson, 8lbs 4oz, was delivered by his very impressive mother on Boxing Day, 2004.
Now that is extraordinary.
