I'm going to shoot someone - Output to DVD problems

About 3/4ths of the way through premiere 1.5 burning a 2 minute piece to DVD, it spits the disc out and says there was an error writing it.

Just for fun, here's the "reason": "Could not complete the last command because: Device Error - Sense Code (3 73 03) - Power Calibration Area Error - Sequential Write (DVDErr, 226051)
YEAH! WOO-HOO! NOW I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT'S WRONG!

Any ideas here?

Oh, and a bonus question: Has premiere ever gotten through any project of anyone's in ediitng history without having a problem somewhere?

I've burned many a disc direct from 1.5's timeline, nary a problem - but that's not what you want to hear.

Without knowing what the code means, my first suspect would be the media. Short of substituting though I'd try exporting the project with Adobe Media Encoder and author in another app if that's possible. Then, there's the possibility of a system issue... Have you had success in the past?

Plenty of success in the past (on the same discs that I'm burning from now). This is only recently rearing its ugly head. I don't know what Adobe Media Encoder is (is it a seperate program?) And I don't know if I have another program that can author a DVD. Wait, I have NERO. What are the steps to getting something out of premiere, into NERO, and then burning through NERO? I think I've tried it before but have run into problems (mainly of me not knowing what to do). Thanks Preston.

You should find Media Encoder as an export option in PPro - comes with it. That will get you an Mpeg 2 file and corresponding audio file. But, if you have no other authoring software it won't do much good. I use Nero all the time for burning but it has no authoring capabilites - unless your version does. Almost all DVD burners come with software for creating video DVD's even though it's rudimentary. Do you have anything else? The idea being you would export your project as an AVI and let another program do the transcoding, "authoring", and burning.

But... The error code suggests something going on with the burner. Maybe you have some kind of hardware/software conflict or bottleneck that's interrupting the burn. Do you have any other media to try? Any rewriteables so you don't keep making coasters?

And I am definitely making LOTS of coasters. I guess that's one more reason to start drinking. I have one other brand of dvd disc. I'll try it out.

I do have one of those programs. But those are usually REALLLLLY basic. And everytime I try to do something complicated with them it ends up in frustration. Bringing in an mpg 2 and an audio file seems complicated. Any advice? I'll fiddle around with it.

Well if you do have one of those basic programs (Sonic or something?), try exporting your project as an AVI and let it do the work. If you get another coaster, it's probably a hardware issue.

How long is your piece?

It's two minutes long.

And if that isn't bad enough, I just outputted to a Microsoft DV AVI movie file, only to watch as the image stutters the whole way through. I'm about to kill someone. Hopefully it won't be myself.
